Description
1776 Pewter Continental Dollar, MS62
CURENCY Obverse
Newman 1-C, Earliest Die State
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter, N. 1-C, W-8445,
R.3, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Careful examination of nearly 100 examples
of Newman 1-C shows multiple obverse die states involving a die
crack through FUGIO that later expands in both directions,
eventually forming several internal die breaks. We have identified
12 stages of the crack that begins at the tops of the G and I in
FUGIO. The silver examples show an intermediate stage that
indicates they were struck concurrently with these pewter
pieces. The present example, a lovely MS62 PCGS coin that carries CAC approval, represents the earliest die state with no evidence of any die cracks. It is one of the first examples struck from the Newman 1-C die pair. Examples from the perfect obverse die are elusive with just 12 occurrences out of 97 pieces studied. This lustrous, nicely centered Mint State piece exhibits pleasing light gray surfaces with scattered marks on each side as expected for the grade. Small surface dents are typical of these important and historical coins.
There is much to learn about the Continental dollars and there are two diverging viewpoints on their production. Were these pieces European products as some suggest, or were they produced in America as others indicate? Regardless of their origin, the Continental dollars are fascinating and tangible reminders of the colonial era in America. Population: 21 in 62, 12 finer. CAC: 4 in 62, 18 finer (8/25).
