Description

1776 Continental Dollar, AU50
Newman 1-C, CURENCY, Pewter
Early Die State

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter, Newman 1-C, W-8445, R.3, AU50 PCGS. All varieties of the Continental dollar coins, as a group, hold the #91 spot in the sixth edition of 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. This example is an early die state with a short crack connecting the right top of the G in FUGIO to the left serif of the adjacent I. An extensive study of images reveals 12 distinct die states of the Newman 1-C pieces. Those die states follow the Newman 1-A and 1-B coins with dotted rings and partially dotted rings on the reverse, although all three varieties are from the same pair of dies. This example blends light and medium gray with rich steel color on the high points of the devices. Population: 10 in 50, 88 finer (12/25). Listed on page 23 of the 2026 Guide Book.
Ex: Albert Fairchild Holden (privately before 1913); Emery Mae Norweb; Norweb Family Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 2453.
