Description
1776 Continental Dollar, N. 1-C, XF45+
A Purely American Design
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter XF45+ NGC. CAC. N.
1-C, W-8445. New and continuing research is changing the face
of the Continental dollar, a colonial issue that has been hailed as
an important American coin since the 19th century. In their January
2018 article in The Numismatist, authors Erik Goldstein and
David McCarthy take a new look at the present state of knowledge
concerning these pieces and suggest that they were produced in
Europe.A common occurrence in past numismatic scholarship is the repetition of old theories that are eventually accepted as fact. Goldstein and McCarthy write:
"We all know that a frequently repeated theory tends to gain traction over time, often morphing into generally accepted fact."
The authors base their research on the examination and interpretation of original source material, or in some cases, the lack thereof:
"Had the Continental Congress embarked on a coin-producing venture, no matter how small or fleeting, a discernable paper trail should exist. Yet, there is nothing but archival silence."
While a few details are offered as documentation, much of their evidence is the silence of individuals or entities. That absence or silence of records fails to fulfill the rules of historical evidence. Regardless of the minting location, these pieces are clearly American in their legends and designs, and remain among the most important American colonial numismatic objects.
This late die state example shows die breaks over GIO of FUGIO, and at the base of NT in CONTINENTAL. Light rub is evident on the high points, while considerable luster remains in the protected areas of this lovely and important light gray Continental dollar. Listed on page 87 of the 2018 Guide Book.
