1776 Continental Dollar in Pewter, AU Details
    EG FECIT, Newman 3-D

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, EG FECIT in Pewter, Newman 3-D, W-8460, R.4 -- Burnished -- NGC Details. AU. Issued later in 1776, the pewter Continental Currency dollars were probably intended to serve as replacements for one-dollar paper notes that had been issued by the Continental Congress earlier in the year. The Newman 3-D variety is distinguished by the Latin inscription EG FECIT (E.G. made it) added to the middle ring, along with FUGIO. The E.G. letters represent the designer's initials (Elisha Gallaudet). Examples are also known in brass and silver, but both are extremely rare.

The present coin is sharply detailed throughout, with just a trace of actual wear on the high points of the devices. A circular die crack is evident on the reverse, starting in the GEORGIA ring and extending around to N.JERSEY. The surfaces are lightly abraded, but show an unnatural brightness due to burnishing. Listed on page 85 of the 2014 Guide Book.
