Description

Near-Mint Continental Dollar, EG FECIT Variety

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT AU58 PCGS. While not as lustrous as the Silverman EG FECIT Dollar we offered for sale on Thursday night, this example is equally well defined and also light in color. Light die cracks are seen through the links on the reverse, as always, and the coin is just a bit off-center, as the Silverman piece was. While it is commonly believed these pieces were struck in pewter, they were actually struck in tin with less than 5% trace elements. Since Continental Dollars are technically a pattern issue, it was undoubtedly thought that tin could just as easily (and more cheaply) represent what a silver striking would look like since silver bullion was so scarce in Colonial America. These rarely seen patterns were engraved by Elisha Gallaudet. The curious EG FECIT label on this coin refers to the inscription located below the motto in the center of the obverse. EG obviously refers to Elisha Gallaudet. FECIT is Latin for "made it." Regular production coins were to have been produced from silver that was promised, but never delivered from France.
The surfaces have a pale gray patina with much of the original brightness of the tin planchet visible around the lettering and other devices. This is an exceptional Continental Dollar and one that will surely find a place in the collection of an advanced Dollar collection or Colonial coin cabinet. Listed on page 33 of the 2002 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2AYU, PCGS# 795)
