Near-Gem 1776 Continental Dollar, EG FECIT

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT MS64 PCGS. Breen-1095, Crosby Pl. VIII, Newman 3-D. In order to give himself credit as the engraver, Elisha Gallaudet signed one of the obverse dies for the Continental Dollar with the inscription EG FECIT. This Latin phrase translates as "E(lisha) G(allaudet) made it." These dies were used to strike at least one brass example, at least two silver examples, and an unknown, yet greater number of pewter impressions.
Writing in 1988, Breen states of this variety: "Die usually cracked through links. UNC survivors are often prooflike." This description fits the present example nicely. There are a few light, yet evident cracks (as struck) through the reverse links, and both sides reveal modest semi-prooflike tendencies with mottled slate-gray and golden-tan iridescence. A few interesting clashmarks (also as produced) are noted at the right obverse border. Both sides were struck from slightly rusted dies, evidence of which can be seen in the fields. Some of the border beads are missing from an imperfectly centered impression, but all major features are readily evident, if not sharply detailed. Neither side reveals any noteworthy post-production distractions. (NGC ID# 2AYU, PCGS# 795)
