Description

    1776 Continental Dollar, XF Details
    Pewter, CURRENCY Variant, Newman 2-C

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. XF. Newman 2-C, W-8455, R.3. Examples of the 1776 Continental dollar were struck in brass, silver, and pewter composition, but the pewter pieces make up the majority of the surviving population. Several die varieties are known, classified by the different spellings of the word "Currency." This specimen represents the Newman 2-C variety, with the word spelled correctly. It is likely that the pewter pieces were intended to circulate in place of the $1 note in late 1776. The issue is somewhat scarce, but enough specimens appear on the market to indicate the original mintage must have been substantial.

The present coin retains most of its original design detail and the fields show unobtrusive abrasions and surface flaws. The mouse-gray surfaces are slightly granular and show some areas of light corrosion, mostly on the reverse. A minor rim bruise shows at 2:30 on the obverse. Listed on page 85 of the 2014 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2AYT, PCGS# 794)
