1776 Newman 2-C Pewter Dollar, MS62+
CURRENCY Obverse
CAC Approved

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, N. 2-C, W-8455, R.3, MS62+ PCGS. CAC. The Continental dollars are recorded in 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. Answers to several questions regarding the Continental dollars have eluded numismatists for many years. One of those questions is the number of surviving examples. The survival of four silver examples and about 15 or 16 brass examples is documented, as is the survival of three examples of Newman 4-D and three of Newman 5-D, as best as can be determined. However, the number of surviving pewter pieces is not certain.

A census of pewter Continental dollars has been attempted, showing about 100 examples of Newman 1-C (including 1-A and 1-B variants), 65 examples of Newman 2-C including two in the present sale, and about 75 examples of the Newman 3-C variety featuring EG FECIT on the obverse. The quantity of additional pieces that are not recorded in the census attempt is unknown but could double the existing population for the pewter varieties. The 1-C and 2-C varieties are typically rated R.3 with an estimated population of 200 to 500 examples, although it is our opinion that they should both be called R.4 like the 3-D EG FECIT variety.

This pleasing Mint State piece features a reverse rotated about 90 degrees. Both sides exhibit steel-gray surfaces with pewter-gray luster. Darker toning splashes are noted at 4 o'clock on the obverse and over the N in CONGRESS on the reverse. Population: 6 in 62 (1 in 62+), 10 finer. CAC: 3 in 62, 7 finer (12/25). Listed on page 23 of the 2026 Guide Book.
