Seldom Seen Pewter Wreath Below Ship
Rhode Island Ship Medal

1778-1779 Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Pewter MS63 NGC. Breen-1142, W-1745, High R.6. The Rhode Island ship token was a British propaganda issue, intended to keep the Dutch from entering the Revolutionary War. A majority of pieces were struck with the incorrect legend VLUGTENDE beneath the ship. The offending word was scraped from examples prior to issue. Additional medals were struck with a wreath ornament where VLUGTENDE had once resided on the die. Usually encountered in brass or copper format, pewter examples are rarities, and most such pieces are in XF to AU grades. As of (8/10), this is the only pewter Rhode Island ship token certified by NGC. Toned light to medium steel-gray, but ample glimpses of the initial pale cream surface emerge within the rigging, boats, and letters. Refreshingly unabraded and devoid of verdigris. Listed on page 48 of the 2011 Guide Book.
