    Description

1778-1779 Brass Rhode Island Ship Token, MS64
    Finest PCGS-Graded Betts-562 Example

1778-1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, No Wreath, Brass MS64 PCGS. CAC. Betts-562, Breen-1139, W-1730, R.3. Ex: Picker. A popular Revolutionary War medal believed to be a British propaganda medal, perhaps intended to show the Dutch the futility of the American cause and dissuade them from signing the Treaty of Armed Neutrality, an alliance of European naval powers meant to prevent the British from arbitrary searches looking for signs of trade with the Americans.

This is a gorgeous near-Gem example of the variety with "vlugtende" obviously removed from the lower portion of the obverse. This piece has fantastic eye appeal, with rich caramel-brown and gold colors. The gold embraces the design elements. The few scattered marks present are minor and do not pose a distraction. PCGS has certified 20 examples of this variety in all grades, with only 7 in Mint State condition, an MS62, five in MS63, and this MS64 example (11/13). Listed on page 50 of the 2014 Guide Book.
