    Description

High Grade Rhode Island Ship Token

1778-1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Copper AU58 PCGS. Breen-1141, Betts-563. A satirical piece initially intended for a Dutch audience and satirizing both the American militia and the British Admiral Howe for having to abandon Newport in 1878-79. While not originally intended for American use, due to a shortage of small change, these pieces circulated readily with other coppers. Pieces with wreath below the ship are slightly more difficult than ones lacking the wreath. The surfaces of this negligibly circulated example are medium to dark brown with subtle waviness to the planchet. A few old pinscratches are noticed in the upper right field of the reverse. Listed on Page 29 of the 2003 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2AUM, PCGS# 576)
