Description

    Undated Rhode Island Ship Token
    Wreath Below Ship, MS63 Brown
    Census-Level Specimen

1778-1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Copper MS63 Brown PCGS Secure. CAC. Breen-1141, W-1740, R.4. A small floral arrangement appears below the ship and is called a wreath according to numismatic tradition. The bouquet takes the place of the word VLUGTENDE that appeared on the first version of this medallic issue. The second version had the word removed from each coin after it was struck, leaving an unsightly void beneath the ship. Replacing the word with the simple floral arrangement on a new die solved the problem. Today, all three varieties are highly collectible. This example has olive-brown surfaces with a few small brassy spots on the reverse. The surfaces are pleasing and problem-free with satin luster and excellent eye appeal. In addition to these copper pieces, examples are also known in brass and pewter, with others that are silvered. This example is tied with one other for the finest copper pieces that PCGS has certified (3/13). Listed on page 50 of the 2013 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2AUM, PCGS# 576)
