1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, MS61
Betts-563, Breen-1141, Whitman-1740

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, Branches Below Ship, Brass, MS61 NGC. Betts-563, Breen-1141, Whitman-1740, R.4. At the time these medals were issued, the Dutch were debating the merits of joining the Russian led Treaty of Armed Neutrality, which was strongly opposed by the English. Most scholars believe these pieces were struck about 1780. They are clearly contemporary pieces, as the first publication of these medals took place in 1787. According to Christopher McDowell's study that appeared in the December 2018 issue of the Journal of Early American Numismatics, these medals were first illustrated in a Japanese numismatic book titled Seiyo Sempu (Notes on Western Coinage). The book was written by a feudal lord with close ties to the Dutch East India Company. At the time, only Dutch ships were permitted to trade with the Japanese. This pleasing Mint State example has smooth walnut-brown surfaces with a small area of corrosion on the obverse. Census (including those certified as copper): 3 in 61; 8 finer (10/19). Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
