Description

1779 Rhode Island Ship Token, MS62
Brass, VLUGTENDE Removed, Betts-562, W-1730

1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, No Wreath, Brass, Betts-562, W-1730, R.3, MS62 NGC. Ex: Carlyle Luer Collection. Three basic varieties of the Rhode Island Ship token, or medal as it is sometimes called. The first has VLUGTENDE below the ship, the second has that word removed (as offered here), and the third has a wreath in place of the removed word. Modern day scholars debate the origin of this piece, some suggesting Holland and others suggesting England. Also debated is the status of this piece as Pro-American or Pro-British. Some suggest that it is a tribute to British Admiral Howe, while others claim it honors the "brilliant retreat" of the Americans. We do know that it is popular with American collectors, and enjoys an important place among American colonial coinage in the Guide Book. This Mint State example has pleasing chocolate-brown and tan surfaces with minuscule, grade-consistent marks on each side. Listed on page 52 of the 2018 Guide Book.
