    Description

1779 Rhode Island Ship Token, AU50
    Wreath Below Ship, Brass, W-1740

1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Brass, AU50 NGC. W-1740. R.4. Distinctive brass coloration leaves no question regarding the composition of this Rhode Island Ship token. On this variety, a wreath has been engraved beneath the obverse ship where the Dutch word "vlugtende" originally appeared. The word means "fleeing," and its presence or absence affects the impression of Admiral Richard Howe's flagship depicted on the obverse. There has been much disagreement regarding these pieces, which some regard as a medal. Brass Rhode Island Ship tokens are decidedly more rare than ones struck in copper. Census: 1 in 50, 8 finer (11/17). Listed on page 52 of the 2018 Guide Book.
