1778-79 Rhode Island Ship Token, AU53
Betts-563, W-1745, Pewter

1779 Token Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Pewter, AU53 PCGS. Betts-563, W-1745, High R.5. These British propaganda medals were intended to prevent the Dutch from entering the Revolutionary War. Three basic varieties are identified. The rarest has VLUGTENDE below the ship. A scarce variety has that word removed, and the most plentiful, offered here, has a wreath added below the ship. These pieces are rather plentiful in brass, although seldom encountered in pewter. Medium gray surfaces have hints of luster and a few dark obverse spots. Listed on page 20 of the 2026 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 53, 12 finer (6/25).
Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 19.
