Description

1781 Libertas Americana Medal, MS61 Brown
Bronzed Copper, Betts-615

1781 Libertas Americana Medal in Bronzed Copper MS61 Brown NGC. CAC. Betts-615. The obverse inscription of LIBERTAS AMERICANA and the date, 4 Jul 1776, clearly refer to the Declaration of Independence signed that date. The reverse bears the dual dates of October 17, 1777, and October 19, 1781, respectively marking the victories of Major General Horatio Gates at Saratoga, and General George Washington at Yorktown.
The French produced Libertas Americana medal is arguably the most important historical medal in U.S. numismatics, and examples are eagerly sought. The number known is unclear, although there are probably about two dozen in silver and three to four dozen in bronze that exist today.
This splendid specimen has reflective fields with chestnut-brown surfaces and a few darker patina spots, with traces of high-point friction. Listed on page 90 of the 2013 Guide Book.

Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
