Description

'1781' North American Token, W-13980, AU58
Glossy Borderline Uncirculated Surfaces

1781 North American Token, W-13980, R.2, AU58 PCGS. Breen asserts the enigmatic North American token was struck in Dublin during the 1810s, and exported to the United States because of its war-caused chronic shortage of coppers -- a possibly embellished theory, although many researchers agree that this popular token was struck somewhat later than 1781. This is an unabraded medium-brown piece with largely smooth surfaces, plus some trace granularity especially at the reverse margin. The coin shows little wear, but the motifs appear circulated, perhaps purposefully made to imply acceptance in commerce. The obverse is struck a few degrees off center toward 5 o'clock, but all legends are intact. Listed on page 40 of the 2026 Guide Book. PCGS Population: 6 in 58 (1 in 58+), 0 finer (3/26).
