Description

1783 J. Chalmers Threepence, XF40
Seldom Encountered Denomination

1783 3PENCE Chalmers Threepence XF40 PCGS. Breen-1018, W-1760, R.5. Annapolis, Maryland silversmith John Chalmers issued small silver coins in 1783, denominated as threepence, sixpence, and shillings. His shillings are most frequently encountered today, and his sixpence are least frequently seen. Although Chalmers earned a profit from his silver coins, they were well-respected and filled a void in commerce in the late 18th century. This attractive example has delicate rose and champagne toning on its pleasing blue-steel surfaces. A well-centered impression shows full border details on the obverse and partial border details on the reverse. Population: 3 in 40, 7 finer (12/14).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2AUP, PCGS# 592, Greysheet# 86)
