    1783 Chalmers Sixpence, XF40
    W-1770 Large Date

1783 6PENCE Chalmers Sixpence, Large Date XF40 PCGS. Breen-1014, W-1770, R.6. There are less than 75 examples known of all four varieties of the Chalmers sixpence, according to rarity ratings published in the Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia. These pieces and the threepence are substantially rarer than the usually seen Chalmers Shillings.. The recut outer curve of the C in CHALMERS and the diagonal die line inside the last E of SIXPENCE are diagnostic for the W-1770 variety. This example has light silver surfaces with tinges of delicate golden toning. The strike is decent although lacking details at one place near the obverse and reverse borders. The softness affects LIS of ANNAPOLIS and IX of SIXPENCE. A few trivial marks are noted. These wonderful example is far finer than the majority of those known.
