Description

1783 Chalmers Shilling, XF45
W-1790, Long Worm Obverse

1783 Chalmers Shilling, Long Worm XF45 PCGS. Breen-1012, W-1790, R.4. Annapolis, Maryland silversmith John Chalmers (1750-1819) produced these small silver coins to aid his local commerce. Threepence, sixpence, and shillings, struck from dies attributed to Thomas Sparrow, saw extensive circulation. Attractive gunmetal-gray surfaces are a trifle off-center, as sometimes found, and show a slight planchet fracture at the base of the reverse. Verdigris from carbon appears at the S of ANNAPOLIS. Somewhat unevenly struck with the lower obverse (including the date) and the lower reverse rather poorly defined on this medallically aligned piece. An important opportunity to acquire this seldom-offered silver colonial issue. Listed on page 20 of the 2026 Guide Book.
