Description

1783 Chalmers Shilling, XF40
Short Worm, W-1785

1783 Chalmers Short Worm Shilling, Breen-1011, W-1785, High R.4, XF40 PCGS. Two birds compete for the same worm (or serpent), which is visibly shorter than the one seen on the Long Worm variant. The Chalmers pieces were struck in various silver denominations, the work of Annapolis, Maryland silversmith, John Chalmers. The Chalmers coinage is elusive today and often shows areas of weakness on some of the motifs. This XF Short Worm shilling weakens at the centers toward the adjacent margin. Other areas are sharp for the assigned grade. Listed on page 20 of the 2026 Guide Book. PCGS Population: 19 in 40, 21 finer (3/26).
