Description

1783 Chalmers Shilling, VF30
Long Worm, W-1790

1783 SHLNG Chalmers Shilling, Long Worm VF30 PCGS. CAC. Breen-1012, W-1790, R.4. John Chalmers was a Maryland silversmith whose private issues attempted to replace problematic worn-out and cut-down Spanish-American silver. The significance of his enigmatic types have long been debated by specialists. The "worm" is the vertical object between the two birds. Long and Short Worm varieties are known, with the Long Worm considered slightly rarer. This lightly abraded cream-gray example has a well defined obverse and a softer impression on the central reverse. Listed on page 51 of the 2014 Guide Book.
