    1783 Chalmers Shilling, XF40
    W-1785, Short Worm

1783 SHLNG Chalmers Shilling, Short Worm XF40 PCGS. CAC. Breen-1011, W-1785, High R.4. The citizens of Annapolis, Maryland, were tired of the abuses associated with the cut pieces from Spanish Milled dollars, pieces known as bits. It seems that some individuals produced nine or even 10 factional pieces from a single Spanish dollar, passing them at eight for a dollar, and making a tidy profit. A local silversmith, John Chalmers, produced his own coins that undoubtedly pleased his friends and neighbors. His threepence, sixpence, and shillings are all rare today. This pewter-gray specimen has clear types and legends with pleasing surfaces the show only trivial handling marks, being far finer than typically encountered. Population: 12 in 40, 8 finer (11/12). (NGC ID# 2AUU, PCGS# 596)
