    1785 Miller 4.1-F.4 Connecticut Copper, AU53
    Condition Census Worthy

1785 CONNCT Connecticut, African Head, M. 4.1-F.4, W-2355, R.1, AU53 NGC. This piece is nearly equal in sharpness to the other African Head copper appearing in the present sale. The deep olive and steel-brown surfaces exhibit golden-tan on the devices. This is an excellent piece for a date, type, or major variety collector.

The Donald G. Partrick Collection includes thirty-eight 1785-dated Connecticut coppers, representing 28 of the 31 known die varieties. The 1975 EAC Sale also had 28 different varieties, as did the Taylor and Perkins Collections. The Ford Collection had 26 varieties, the Norweb family had 21, and Oechsner had 20. The other African Head copper, Miller 4.2-F.6, is one of the three varieties that eluded Don Partrick. Listed on page 63 of the 2020 Guide Book.
Ex: Douglas I. McKay Sale (Parke-Bernet Galleries, 5/1969), lot 380; Donald G. Partrick. This is one of two Connecticut coppers that appeared in the McKay sale, and the only one that was plated in that catalog.
