    Description

    1786 Connecticut Copper, MS61 Brown
    Probable Finest Known Miller 5.8-F

1786 COPPER Connecticut, Mailed Bust Left, M. 5.8-F, W-2620, High R.4, MS61 Brown NGC. 137.4 grains. Although the upper obverse and lower reverse show weakened details, this impressive piece has smooth and lustrous chocolate-brown and blue-steel surfaces with a minor planchet defect at the left obverse border. The obverse is slightly off-center while the reverse shows good centering with a full date. Only the tops of ET LIB are off the flan on the reverse. The Partrick specimen, from the Dr. Thomas Hall Collection, may qualify as the finest known of Miller 5.8-F. It is certainly high in the Condition Census as noted in the Oechsner catalog. Obverse 5.8 makes three appearances with reverse dies F, H.2, and O.2. Reverse F makes no other appearances in the 1786 Connecticut series. Listed on page 65 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Dr. Thomas Hall; Virgil Brand; Herbert Oechsner Collection (Stack's, 9/1988), lot 1051; Jon Hanson (9/9/1988); Donald G. Partrick.
