1786 N YORK New York Copper, NON VI VIRTUTE VICI, Small Head --
Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. Baker-13,
W-5730, Musante GW-07, R.6. An important rarity in the New York
and Washington series. The obverse features a crude portrait of
General George Washington facing right with the motto NON VI
VIRTUTE VICI around, which translates roughly as won by virtue
not by force. The reverse depicts Liberty seated facing right
with a pileus and scales of justice. The date 1786 is in the
exergue, and the legend NEO EBORACENSIS around, Latin for New
York. About 25 pieces are believed known, mostly in circulated
grades, and two contemporary counterfeits also exist. This
well-centered deep-brown representative is corroded but remains
pleasing for the type. The legends, dentils, and outlines of the
major design elements are strong. Listed on page 66 of the 2020
