Description
1786 Maris 24-P New Jersey Copper
MS64+ Brown
Remarkable Addition to the Census
The New Finest Known Example
1786 New Jersey Copper, Curved Plow Beam, M. 24-P, W-4965, R.2,
MS64+ Brown PCGS. This remarkable example was hidden in the
Senator Platt Family Collection that was started before 1870, and
only recently appeared in an auction last August. New York Senator
Thomas Collier Platt (1833-1910) started the collection that his
descendants continued for multiple generations. It is undoubtedly
the finest known Maris 24-P New Jersey copper. This boldly detailed example features excellent definition on the obverse and reverse. The horse head shows a touch of weakness on the neck, and the central part of the shield is a trifle weak. Slightly imperfect centering is expected on these 18th century coins. No evidence of wear is noted on either side of this lustrous satin brown copper that retains hints of original mint red, especially on the obverse. That alone sets this piece apart from most New Jersey coppers of any variety.
The most recent published census of New Jersey copper varieties appeared last year, and this incredible example is a new addition to that record. Roger S. Siboni, John L. Howes, and A. Buell Ish compiled the New Jersey State Coppers Companion. Adding the current piece to their roster provides a list of the top nine examples of Maris 24-P, in the order they present:
MS64+ Brown PCGS. Senator Thomas Collier Platt (1833-1910); Frank Hinchman Platt (1856-1920); Livingston Platt (1885-1968); Frank Hinchman Platt, II (1913-1990); Frank Hinchman Platt, II Estate; Global Showcase Auction (Stack's Bowers, 8/2024), lot 4290. The present example.
