    Description

    1787 Fugio Cent, AU53, N.1-B
    No Cinquefoils, UNITED STATES

1787 1C Fugio Cent, UNITED STATES, No Cinquefoils AU53 PCGS. CAC. N. 1-B, W-6600, R.4. The Newman 1 obverse appears to be a prototype die as it was used to strike the extremely rare N. 1-CC American Congress pattern. Newman 1 lacks cinquefoils but does possess a cross after the date. The die was later paired with the Raised Rims pattern reverse to coin the very rare N. 1-Z. Apparently, Newman 1 then became part of the regular die inventory, and eventually was used to coin a STATES UNITED variety, N. 1-L, and the present UNITED STATES variety. Both of the latter varieties are very scarce. This is a lovely chocolate-brown example with sharp definition and smooth surfaces. Struck from prominently clashed dies. Listed on page 87 of the 2013 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B8D, PCGS# 880)
