Description
1787/1788 Connecticut Copper, AU53
Mailed Bust Left, Miller 9-R
Finest Certified Example
1787/8 CONNCT Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Left, M. 9-R, High
R.4, AU53 PCGS. A very scarce Guide Book variety and the
finest of only a few pieces graded by NGC and PCGS combined. The M.
9-R variety employs a reverse originally dated 1788, but bold
repunching shows a 7 over the final 8, either to correct an error
or perhaps backdating previous date punches. This is an essentially
unabraded medium-brown example that displays a bold strike and a
diagnostic beard-like die break beneath the portrait. Struck from
rotated dies, the reverse is slightly misaligned toward 10 o'clock.
The surface quality is exceptional for a Connecticut copper at this
grade regardless of variety. Listed on page 32 of the 2026 Guide
Book, where it is unpriced above above AU50. PCGS Population: 1
in 53, 0 finer (3/26).Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 56.
