    Description

    1787 Massachusetts Cent, Choice AU
    'Horned Eagle,' Ryder 2b-A
    Guide Book Variety

1787 CENT Massachusetts Cent, Horned Eagle, Ryder 2b-A, W-6040, R.3, AU55 NGC. The die break from the eagle's forehead explains the variety's nickname, the Massachusetts counterpart of the "Horned Bust" Miller 4-L 1787 Connecticut copper. The present better-grade example exhibits plentiful mint gloss, although the Indian's clothing and the eagle's shield display light wear. There are no planchet deficiencies or granularity. Marks are inconsequential except for minor obverse rim dings at 2:30 and 10 o'clock. Listed on page 59 of the 2016 Guide Book. Census: 1 in 55, 9 finer (6/15).

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2B26, PCGS# 305)
