Description

1787 Connecticut Copper, Fine 12
Enigmatic Engraving Error
M. 32.5-aa, Perhaps INDE Over ETDE

1787 CONNCT Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left, INDE over ETDE, M. 32.5-aa, W-3260, R.4, Fine 12 PCGS. The Miller 32.5-aa variety inspires many interpretations for the erroneous letters beneath IN of INDE. Perhaps the simplest explanation is the best -- that the engraver mistakenly entered ET of ETLIB before correcting the legend to INDE. This is hardly the most dramatic of numerous engraving blunders in the Connecticut series, but it is one of the most debated. Two obverses are paired with the curious reverse and each variety is increasingly scarce-to-rare with each step up the grading ladder. Tan-orange fields are smoothly worn but free of any significant marks or surface problems, while the equally smooth raised motifs offer contrasting lavender-brown patina. The lower obverse is weaker than elsewhere on the coin, but the design elements are otherwise bold for the assigned grade. Great eye appeal remains intact. Listed on page 32 of the 2026 Guide Book. PCGS Population: 1 in 12, 6 finer (3/26).
