1787 Draped Bust Left Connecticut Copper, AU50
Very Rare M. 33.24-Z.10, Finest Known

1787 Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.24-Z.10, W-3720, R.7, AU50 PCGS. Miller 33.24-Z.10 is one of the great rarities of the Connecticut copper series. The present lot is the first appearance of the die marriage in any Heritage auction, since it was absent from the extensive Partrick and Newman collections. A VG10 example realized $6,600 in an August 2024 Stack's Bowers auction. The present example is finest known for the variety, as its eye appeal and planchet quality are clearly superior to the Sydney F. Martin specimen. The marriage is the sole usage of the 33.24 obverse die, and this coin demonstrates it failed quickly, with a sizeable retained break from the rim to the neck of the bust. The lightly circulated tan-brown surfaces are free from distractions. The centering is close to ideal, as only the base of the date is off the flan. Listed on page 32 of the 2026 Guide Book.
