    1787 Miller 16.2-NN.2 Connecticut Copper, XF40
    Finest of Only Six Known

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 16.2-NN.2, W-3010, High R.7, XF40 NGC. Obverse 16.2 is known with reverse dies NN.1 and NN.2. Reverse die NN.2 is found with obverse dies 16.2 and 16.6. Both dies are known in other combinations, although this particular die marriage is extremely rare. Robert Vlack reported his discovery of this variety in the October 1978 issue of The Colonial Newsletter. The discovery coin grades about Very Good. Another example with Fine details appeared in the Taylor sale where it was incorrectly called the discovery coin. A third example that also grades VG or so was offered in the Bowers and Merena sale of January 1991. Today we know of six examples of 16.2-NN.2.

This piece from the Donald G. Partrick Collection is far and away the finest known example of the variety. The second finest is also part of the Partrick Collection. The other four grade Good or VG, each with slight damage. Minor planchet roughness is noted in the left obverse field of this two-tone piece that exhibits steel-brown toning and tan on the devices. The strike is nicely centered. The reverse is a late die state with noticeable peripheral die erosion. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Jon Hanson (1/4/2001); Donald G. Partrick.
