    1787 Miller 29.2-N Connecticut Copper, VF35
    High Condition Census

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 29.2-N, W-3160, R.6, VF35 NGC. 156.9 grains. Obverse 29.2 is known with reverse dies N and o. Reverse die N is found with obverse dies 8, 29.2, and 40. A pleasing example of a scarce variety, displaying blue-steel and tan on the obverse, and walnut, mahogany, and tan on the reverse. A nicely centered piece, although the obverse detail is tight to the lower border. Perhaps two dozen examples of Miller 29.2-N survive, and nearly all of those are found in lower grades. This piece is possibly the finest known. The Choice VF Ford coin was a little sharper, but with some surface roughness. All other collections that we have tracked included examples grading Fine or lower, and the variety was missing from the Martin and Newman collections. Prior to this appearance, a VF25 NGC example is the finest that has appeared at auction in recent memory. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Herbert Oechsner Collection (Stack's, 9/1988), lot 1095; Jon Hanson (9/9/1988); Donald G. Partrick.
