1787 Connecticut Copper, MS62 Red and Brown
    The Garrett Collection Miller 32.2-X.4

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 32.2-X.4, W-3230, R.5, MS62 Red and Brown NGC. Obverse die 32.2 is known with reverse dies X.1, X.2, and X4. Reverse die X.4 is known with obverse dies 32.2, 32.3, and 43.2. Bluish-steel toning accompanies considerable mint red on the obverse of this piece, with substantial satiny mint red on the reverse. The original mint color trumps a blunt strike on this amazing Connecticut copper. A planchet flaw at the C of AUCTORI positively identifies this piece as the Garrett Collection coin, earlier from the Col. James W. Ellsworth Collection. The Garrett cataloger wrote: "Another classic issue which will be remembered as long as numismatists collect Connecticut coppers."

The planchet is smooth and glossy with exceptional eye appeal. Dana Linett wrote about this piece: "Important as the finest known example of a very rare variety but, ultimately, more significant as a 'type-coin extraordinaire.' A highlight of this sale." His words apply equally today. While NGC has certified 102 Mint State Connecticut coppers in grades from MS60 to MS65, 101 of those are designated Brown, and this single piece is called Red and Brown. While the "Finest Known" status of some Connecticut coppers can be debated, the status of this piece as the finest known Miller 32.2-X.4 cannot be disputed. Its importance cannot be overemphasized. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
