Description
1787 Miller 33.1-Z.13 Connecticut Copper, AU53
Condition Census
1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.1-Z.13, W-3310, R.5,
AU53 NGC. 142.1 grains. Obverse die 33.1 is known with reverse
dies Z.13 and Z.19. Reverse die Z.13 is known with obverse dies
33.1, 33.8, 33.21, 33.32, and 33.39. An extraordinary example from
the Frederick Taylor Collection that was dispersed 33 years ago.
Uniform olive and golden-brown surfaces with some cartwheel luster
present on both sides. The Taylor cataloger commented: "To our
knowledge this is the finest offered at auction," a comment that
applies equally today. When novice collectors look at the vast array of Miller numbers for Connecticut coppers, eyes tend to glaze over. Even many advanced collectors who aren't familiar with the system tend toward bewilderment. Miller divided obverse and reverse dies into "families" based on the major type, legend, punctuation, and ornamentation. Individual dies within each family were then described.
Obverse family 33 has a Draped Bust facing left with the legend [c] AUCTORI: [c] to the left, and [c] CONNEC: [c] to the right, where [c] is a cinquefoil, which could be described as a "five-leaf clover." There are 50 individual obverse dies in family 33, and they are numbered 33.1 through 33.50. There are 83 different obverse families and 210 individual obverse dies in the Connecticut series from 1785 to 1788.
Reverse family Z has the legend [c] INDE: [c] [c] [c] to the left, and [c] ETLIB: [c] to the right. The 27 individual reverse dies of family Z are numbered Z.1 through Z.27. There are 110 reverse families and 194 individual reverse dies in the Connecticut series.
The highly recommended Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins includes a concise, illustrated guide to the Connecticut series. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
