    1787 Miller 33.10-W.6 Connecticut Copper, AU58
    Single Finest Known

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.10-W.6, W-3500, High R.6, AU58 NGC. Obverse die 33.10 is known with reverse dies W.6, Z.7, and Z.8. Reverse die W.6 is known with obverse die 33.10. Probably no more than 13 to 15 examples of this die marriage are known, and this one is clearly the finest among examples that have surfaced over the past 40 years. John Ford's collection included a well-worn coin in Very Good/Fine condition, and the variety was missing from such advanced Connecticut sets as those formed by Taylor, Norweb, and Oechsner. More recently, the Ted L. Craige example in XF45 was offered in 2013. The cataloger noted that 12 examples had been positively identified as of 2000, adding: "If no others have been identified since 2000, this becomes the 13th. If another example has turned up, it is doubtful it is as nice as this one." It is almost unsurprising, then, that Don Partrick would have this borderline-Uncirculated example tucked away. As always, the obverse is softer than the reverse, but overall detail is far better than the other recognized Miller 33.10-W.6 coins. The diagnostic radial crack appears at 4 o'clock on the reverse. Both sides are glossy with pleasing reddish-brown color. An important opportunity and a rare public offering of this challenging variety, and the best surviving example from these dies. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Jon Hanson (11/7/2000); Donald G. Partrick.
