    1787 Miller 33.12-W.3 Connecticut Copper, VF20
    Elusive Die Marriage

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.12-W.3, W-3525, Low R.7, VF20 NGC. 145.2 grains. Obverse die 33.12 is known with reverse dies W.3, Z.10, Z.16, Z.21, and Z.24. Reverse die W.3 is known with obverse dies 33.12, 33.25, 33.26, and 33.44. A lovely mid-grade example, this copper displays rich olive-brown toning on the high points with walnut toning in the smooth and somewhat glossy fields. The Taylor cataloger stated that just three were known to him in 1987, an accurate statement at the time. Today, perhaps as many as a dozen examples are known. This piece ranks fourth or fifth in the Condition Census, behind the XF Ford coin, the Choice VF ANS coin, an example in the June 1994 Stack's sale, and possibly the Hessberg sale coin. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Richard Picker (1962); Frederick Taylor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1987), lot 2524; Donald G. Partrick.

Miller 33.12-Z.10 is not included in the Donald G. Partrick Collection. The unique discovery coin was identified by California collector and dealer Jesse Patrick in the early 1980s, and appeared in the 2002 C-4 Convention Sale of his collection.
