    1787 Miller 33.12-Z.24 Connecticut Copper, MS61 Brown
    Apparently the Second Finest Known

1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.12-Z.24, W-3545, R.6, MS61 Brown NGC. Obverse die 33.12 is known with reverse dies W.3, Z.10, Z.16, Z.21, and Z.24. Reverse die Z.24 is known with obverse dies 33.12, 33.18, 33.25, and 33.50. While the Stepney Hoard example, also in the Donald G. Partrick Collection, has generally been regarded as the finest known, this MS61 Brown example is surely right behind it, if not its equal. This glossy coin is better-struck with razor-sharp detail on the laureated bust. Pleasing mahogany-brown toning reveals steel-blue and golden-tan accents with faded mint red color remaining. The reverse die is broken, as shown by a vertical break from the right edge of the fourth cinquefoil down through the right side of the first 7. Other cracks appear on that side. Planchet flaws are noted at the upper obverse and on the reverse rim at 7 o'clock. A rare, desirable variety missing from the Garrett, Roper, Norweb, Oechsner, Newman, and Martin collections, and one of the top two examples on the Condition Census with only VF or lower pieces trailing behind. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Jon Hanson (1/4/2001); Donald G. Partrick.
