    Description

    1787 Miller 8-a.1 Connecticut Copper, Fine 12
    The Finer of Two Known

1787 Connecticut, Mailed Bust Left, M. 8-a.1, W-2845, R.8, Fine 12 NGC. 142.8 grains. Obverse 8 is known with reverse dies N, O, and a.1. Reverse die a.1 is found with obverse dies 8, 26, and 27. The cataloger of the September 1993 Stack's sale wrote: "This coin was misattributed in the Taylor sale by an inexperienced cataloguer as an M. 8-O and placed in a group lot." Misattribution was not unusual as the discovery of this new variety was reported in the November 1961 issue of the Numismatic Journal as Miller 8-BB. The discovery coin was found at a Washington D.C. convention in 1961. Edward "Ned" Barnsley acquired the coin a short time later and discovered its true identity as Miller 8-a.1 as he reported in the December 1963 issue of The Colonial Newsletter. In his report, Barnsley noted similarities between reverse dies a.1 and BB, but also noted distinct differences. The whereabouts of the discovery coin are not known, although most of Barnsley's collection was donated to the American Numismatic Society.

The present piece from the Taylor Collection is the second known example with rumors of a third, but no such piece has come to light. Splendid olive and steel-brown surfaces have minimal handling marks on either side. The planchet is incomplete with a small clip at 8 o'clock. The Condition Census status of the two pieces remains undetermined as the other example has not been seen, nor has its condition been described. Listed on page 65 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Frederick Taylor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1987), lot 2412 in a group lot as M. 8-O; Mike Ringo; Unidentified Vermont Collector; Stack's (9/1993), lot 974; Jon Hanson (9/9/1993); Donald G. Partrick.
