    1787 Miller 33.36-T.3 Connecticut Copper, XF40
    The Discovery Coin

1787 COPPER Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.36-T.3, W-3905, R.8, XF40 NGC. 148.3 grains. Obverse die 33.36 is known with reverse dies T.1, T.2, T.3, and SS. Reverse die T.3 is only known with obverse die 33.36. To our knowledge, this coin remains unique among Connecticut coppers. Three diagnostics are clear, avoiding confusion with other 33.36 varieties: 1. The branch points directly to the second cinquefoil; 2. The upper loop of 8 in the date is boldly recut; 3. A die crack along the top of INDE: extends to the adjacent cinquefoil.

This example is further identified by slight flattening of the planchet edge at the lower-right obverse, with a corresponding flatness above the upper-right cinquefoil and pole end on the reverse. Robert Martin's notes make no mention of another example, nor does research by Ted Craige and Richard Picker, who conducted extensive research into this variety many years ago. Donald G. Partrick notes "golden brown and slight granularity, UNIQUE." We can add that the surfaces and color appear smooth and strong in keeping with the assigned XF grade, with just slight weakness at the effigy's hair and Liberty's lower elements. Liberty's head and upper torso are well-defined. The date is sharp and fully on the flan. In May 1991, The Colonial Newsletter reported "another specimen has been reported but not yet verified." We have located no such confirmation of another example throughout the intervening years. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
