1787 Miller 33.48-Z.25 Connecticut Copper, VF20
Finer of Two Known
1787 COPPER Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 33.48-Z.25,
W-4040, High R.7, VF20 NGC. 137.3 grains. Obverse die 33.48 is
known with reverse die Z.25. Reverse die Z.25 is known with obverse
dies 33.29 and 33.48. This coin was called XF in the Taylor
Collection auction, with the notation that the centers were less
sharp because of advanced die buckling. The central obverse and
reverse are indeed flat, a combination of die state and smooth
wear, with the grade adjusted by NGC accordingly. Overall, the
surfaces are exceptional for the grade, both in color and quality.
Glossy light-brown fields and devices display faint red overtones,
with a vignette of deep-brown around some of the letters and raised
elements. The coin is perfectly centered with virtually no
distractions. Of the two pieces known, this is clearly the finer.
Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.Ex: Hines Collection; Frederick Taylor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1987), lot 2622; Donald G. Partrick.
There are three extremely rare varieties that are not included in the Donald G. Partrick Collection. Those varieties are designated as Miller 33.49-Z.7, 33.50-Z.24, and 34-k.3. Miller 33.49-Z.7 is apparently unique, and was discovered by Ohio collector Ken Mote in the early 1990s. A short time later, Mote also discovered Miller 33.50-Z.24. Rounding out the trio is the Miller 34-k.3 rarity with a surviving population of five or six pieces.
