    Description

    1787 Miller 48-g.5 Connecticut Copper, MS64 Brown
    Single Finest for the Variety
    Among the Finest DBL Survivors

1787 COPPER Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 48-g.5, W-4315, R.5, MS64 Brown NGC. 145.1 grains. Obverse die 48 is known with reverse dies g.5 and k.3. Reverse die g.5 is known with obverse dies 24 and 48. This is the single finest known example and the plate coin in both Taxay and Breen. The New Netherlands sale described the coin as "Absolutely Superb. A MS-65; separated from grade 70 solely because the mint red has toned down to a light olive-brown with silvery iridescence, blending into bluish and pinking tones. Magnificently struck, particularly upon the obverse." Definition on that side is complete, and the reverse is only marginally softer. A couple of small planchet voids at the upper obverse and lower reverse, and an area of roughness left of Liberty's head are the only flaws, minor as they may be. Lustrous, reddish and violet-brown surfaces are impeccably preserved. Only four submissions have qualified for the MS64 Brown level at NGC, and a single coin is graded finer for all 1787 Draped Bust Left varieties combined (9/20). Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
