New Jersey Camel Head Struck Over 1788 Connecticut Copper

1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Camel Head, Struck Over 1788 Connecticut Copper. AU58 NGC. Maris 56-n, R.1. This is a wonderful example for the specialist in New Jersey copper coinage. Nearly all examples of the New Jersey Camel Head variety are struck over other copper coins of the period. The 1788 date from the original Connecticut copper is faintly visible along the border above LUR in PLURIBUS, and is inverted in relation to these letters. This piece is fascinating in that the host coin bears a later date than the overstrike. Much additional detail from the host coin's design is visible at the center on each side. Attractive smooth brown surfaces with hints of sea-green on the reverse. This was struck on a defective planchet with the planchet crack visible on each side. From the Hillyer Ryder Collection. Listed on page 50 of the 2004 Guide Book. (#515)
