    1787 Fugio Cent, Newman 1-L, XF45
    Cross After Date, STATES UNITED
    Condition Census Example, Ex: Ryder-Boyd-Ford

1787 FUGIO Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, No Cinquefoils XF45 PCGS. N. 1-L, W-6605, R.5. Ex: Ryder-Boyd-Ford. Newman 1-L is a rare variety that pairs the Cross After Date, No Cinquefoils obverse with the STATES UNITED (normal rim) reverse. In his 2009 Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins, Dave Bowers called this piece the finest known. More recently, the Rob Retz-Jeff Rock Fugio Copper Notes reference (2016) lists this piece as second on the Condition Census of 17 coins, after the Roper-Terranova specimen. Another example from the Ted Crag Collection is graded higher but unlisted. This is certainly a Top Three representative and was used as the plate coin in Eric Newman's landmark book on the series. Glossy, deep brown surfaces exhibit golden accents and a bit of roughness at the lower obverse. The sun dial, sun, reverse label, and rings are bold. Only a few letters in BUSINESS are incomplete. Faint scratches within the ring at 7 o'clock confirm the pedigree. Listed on page 89 of the 2020 Guide Book.
Ex: Noted in the Ford sale as coming with a rounded ticket that recorded "Exchange Miller Dec. 20, 1918"; Hillyer Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd Estate; John J. Ford, Jr. Collection (Stack's, 10/2003), lot 231; Baltimore Auction (Stack's Bowers, 3/2019), lot 345.
