    1787 Excelsior Copper, Exceptional AU50
Eagle on Globe Left, Eagle Reverse
    New York Arms, W-5785

1787 N YORK New York Excelsior Copper, Eagle Left, Breen-980, W-5785, R.6, AU50 PCGS. In contrast to many survivors that have corroded or granular surfaces, this smooth and appealing medium-brown example displays a remarkably hard, high-quality planchet. The reverse is a notch deeper in color but equals the obverse in surface quality and strike. Both sides show wear and a few small marks on the exposed central design elements -- the sun and mountains on the obverse, and the shield stripes on the reverse.

Excelsior coppers have several design styles, all rare to extremely rare. This is the Eagle on Globe Facing Left variety, a strong R.6 although even rarer in About Uncirculated condition. Its companion piece, with the Eagle on Globe Facing Right, is rarer still. Other designs feature an Indian, George Clinton, and a variant with transposed arrows and branches. Engraver John Bailey is credited with the design, in partnership with Ephraim Brasher. The resemblance of Excelsior coppers to the famous Brasher doubloons add to their appeal. Listed on page 66 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 50, 3 finer (9/17).
