    Description

AU 50 Serpent Head New Jersey Copper

1787 New Jersey Copper AU 50 PCGS. Serpent Head. Breen-914, Maris-54k. Well struck for the issue with original chocolate-brown color. There are minor contact marks and the planchet is slightly irregular on the reverse at the periphery from 8 to 12 o'clock. This interesting variety is thought to have been coined without state authority by an unknown private mint. Very rare, as PCGS has certified only 5 coins total and only 2 pieces in AU 50 with none finer (6/99).
General Matthias Ogden, the Revolutionary War hero, used his considerable influence in New Jersey to pass the "Act for Establishing a Coinage of Copper in This State." He also arranged for three English immigrants to be authorized to make the coinage. The three Englishmen, Thomas Goadsby, Albion Cox, and Walter Mould had a disagreement before any coins were struck and Mould was allowed to strike his own New Jersey coinage in Morris County. Both Rahway Mills, the mint of Goadsby and Cox, and Mould's mint were plagued by numerous problems, including lawsuits, and the coinage was spasmodic and moved from location to location. Before the coinage was finished many other people were involved and coins were struck by different companies including the Machin's Mill people. Listed on page 50 of the 1999 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B4W, PCGS# 518)
