Description

1788 Connecticut Copper, MS61 Brown
Miller 2-D, Mailed Bust Right

1788 Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Right, M. 2-D, W-4405, R.1, MS61 Brown NGC. The 1788 Connecticut coppers were struck at Machin's Mills on underweight planchets. Not all of the dies for the issue were engraved by James Atlee, but both obverse 2 and reverse D appear to be Atlee's work, per the Howes-Rosen-Trudgen Machin's Mills reference. This example displays a hint of rub at the center of the shield. The tan-brown and lavender surfaces exhibit obverse flan flaws on the hair of the bust, and the C and R in AUCTORI. A fairly early die state without obverse breaks. The highest-graded Miller 2-D we have offered at auction, surpassing the AU55 NGC Eric P. Newman specimen. Listed on page 33 of the 2026 Guide Book.
