    1788 Miller 16.4-L.2 Connecticut Copper, MS61 Brown
    The Second Finest Known

1788 COPPER Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, M. 16.4-L.2, W-4620, R.5, MS61 Brown NGC. Obverse die 16.4 is known with reverse dies A.2 and L.2, and is also identified as 1787 obverse die 32.4 with reverse dies F, X.5, Z.3, and Z.20. Reverse die L.2 is known with obverse dies 14.1 and 16.4. A prominent die crack crosses the reverse through the L in LIB to the center of the seated figure. Refer to the 1788 Miller 14.1-L.2 offered above for the "Fatal Break" state of this reverse die. This is a splendid Mint State copper with impressive chocolate-brown surfaces and splashes of rich steel toning, mostly on the obverse, representing trivial planchet lamination. The centering is a little off with the tops of CONNEC complete but tight against the border. A sharply defined piece with glossy, lustrous surfaces. Just two Mint State examples of this die marriage are known, the other one a remarkable double struck piece with original mint red from the Eric P. Newman Collection that we offered in 2014. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.

Miller 16.4-A.2 is an extremely rare variety that is not included in the Donald G. Partrick Collection. The four known examples include one in the Yale University Collection.
Ex: EAC Sale (Pine Tree, 2/1975), lot 319A; later, Jon Hanson (7/16/2003); Donald G. Partrick.
